Advantages of Taking Skiing and Snowboarding Gear on Rent

0

Purchasing the required gear may be the most convenient option for you if you are going on a skiing or snowboarding trip, but what may stop you is the cost of the new gear. Under such circumstances, you can choose to hire the equipments, especially if you are a beginner and are not sure about your success with the sport.

Hiring the snowboarding or skiing gear is much more affordable than purchasing the new one, especially if you cannot spend several dollars on purchasing them. By renting these equipments, you will also not need to carry them all over your trip in your car or on the plane. You never know what your body will be like the next year. It may go slimmer or fatter and can you really afford to buy a new one every year. Keeping all these things in mind, hiring the equipments is undoubtedly the better option than purchasing a new one.

Once you have decided to get your equipments on rent, you have to reserve it much before going out for your trip, especially if you are going out during the peak season. If you wait till the last minute, you will need to search a lot for the appropriate equipments and sizes.

If you have decided to rent the equipment at the mountain itself because you do not want to carry your gear all up to the mountain, you need to arrive at least an hour before you are planning to snowboard or ski. This will give you enough time to get your gear and fit in well. But if you are planning to rent it elsewhere, it is good to get the gear at least a day before your schedule.

The type of ski and snowboard equipments that you hire depends upon the weight of your body. The gear has to be of the right weight and your shoes should be of the right size.

While signing the contract for hiring the equipments, the company will also offer you insurance over the gear, the cost of which is usually a single dollar for a day. This comes to 3-4 dollars for one trip. This cost is much less when we compare it to hundreds of dollars we will have to spend if we damage the rented snowboard or ski.

All these tips will prove to be very helpful to decide which ski or snowboard equipments to rent, so that we can head towards our expedition all set.

Surf Fitness: Prepare Now And Get The Most From Your Next Holiday

0

I love to surf. I love to travel. The great thing about these 2 loves is that they go hand in hand. I’ve gone a little bit further than most people though, and made these passions my life. I moved to Australia’s Gold Coast and set up a surfboard rental company that endeavours to bring together, all the services the travelling surfer needs.

One of the great things about this business is I deliver the surfboards myself. This gives me the opportunity to have a brief chat with every surfer coming through the Gold Coast using my services. I really enjoy this part of the business as being a surfer myself, I enjoy the contact with people who have a similar passion to mine. Also, it gives me the opportunity to get into the heads of my clients, so I can understand what their expectations are for their surfing holiday and can continually improve my services based on their desires.

During these chats, the number 1 thing my clients desire is that little bit of additional surfing fitness. This makes sense. Nothing can really prepare you for the rigors of a surfing holiday, other than lots and lots of surfing. No matter how much you surf at home, the chances are you’ll surf more on your holiday for no reason other than the fact that you’ll have more time to play with.

So what is the best way to get that extra bit of fitness for a surfing holiday. I believe there are 3 things you should do. The first two should be part of your healthy lifestyle, the last should be a pre travel booster. Here they are:

General endurance is critical. You have to have a base level of aerobic fitness to surf. Otherwise you won’t be able to paddle out past the breakers, paddle into a wave or breath through a hold down. Further, with this fitness comes a level of confidence, this is critical for surfing.

This requirement needs to be specific to the water though. You need to be water fit. Endurance in the water is so different to endurance on land. Moving through the water is almost a feeling, an art. The worse your feel for the water is, the more energy you’ll burn up when you take to it.

So get in the pool and swim at least twice a week. If you have a break near you, surf at least twice a week. No matter what you do, just make sure you are getting wet twice a week, every week of the year. Your water fitness will just come. It will just be something that develops, you will become more and more familiar with the water environment simply because you are being in it. Don’t make any excuses, go on, get wet.

The second thing you need to think about is your core strength, balance and flexibility. People don’t understand how important this is, especially when you increase your level of involvement. When you have a good core fitness and level of flexibility, your body holds together better and recovers quicker. That leaves you better prepared for your next session.

Yoga is the answer here. Yoga is so good for surfing fitness, it is almost as if it was invented purely with the surfer in mind. Not only does yoga help you improve your flexibility, balance and core strength, it also re-aligns and re-balances your body back into its natural and healthy position, away from the imbalanced position which surfing causes.

One of the great things about yoga also, is it corrects the imbalances which surfing brings to your body. Just think for example of the strain which paddling puts on your back. Yoga brings all these over extensions back into balance. I can’t recommend it enough for surfers.

That takes care of your day to day fitness programming, keeping your body in reasonable shape for the waves any day of the week. Once you have that sorted out, all you need to do in the weeks leading up to your holiday, is some functional surf specific training. Functional training is training which has been designed to cater for a specific function. In our case the function is the fitness requirements of surfing. So you need a fitness program that focuses on strengthening the specific muscles you use in the water and on your surfboard.

You’ve got your base level of fitness sorted out already by ensuring point 1 and 2 above are part of your lifestyle. This training program recognises though, that there will be a short period of time where you will need a higher level of fitness (Ie. For those long sessions while on holiday) and prepares you specifically with those higher needs in mind.

I hope this helps you prepare for your next surfing trip where ever it may be. We all know training can sometimes be a bit of a drag, just remember how much more fun those surfing days are when the waves, your skill and your body all come together at the same time, so you can catch that elusive perfect wave.

How To Use Heart Rate Monitors

0

There are some things to keep in mind when using a heart rate monitor during a workout. It is much easier to buy one than using it properly from the start when exercising. One thing that should never be forgotten is that the heart rate monitor helps you maintain a level of exercise that your heart can keep up with.

You need to be able to calculate your maximum heart rate, also known as MRH, plus the heart rate you wish to work on. To achieve this, a certain formula has to be followed. To start with you need the difference between your age and 220. Once you have that number multiply it by the percentage that would serve as the lower in your exercise range. The next step is to again multiply the difference between your age and 220 with another percentage, this time at the higher end. For your training these two results will be your heart rate for training.

For example, this can be illustrated using a 25 year old person. The difference between 220 and 25 is 195. The number 195 is then multiplied by 65%, and the result would be would be 26.75, or rounded off to 127. If you multiply 195 again, but this time with 80%, then you would arrive at 156. This means that the desired heart rate during a training session must be anywhere from 127 to 156 beats each minute.

In regards to the percentages, not just any random number is chosen. These percentages used are based upon training boundaries. The first range of 50% – 60% is to maintain a healthy heart and is what can be considered good for daily exercises. The second range of 60% – 70% is for aerobics or for fat burning, and the 70% – 80% range is considered necessary for any endurance training. Finally, the 80 – 90% range, also known as the anaerobic threshold zone, is used to greatly improve cardiovascular fitness.

Once these heart rate ranges have been determined, then you can use your heart rate monitor. First the back of the transmitter should be dampened. This way it will snugly fit against the skin where contact is supposed to be made. Then it is adjusted, but without any deep breaths being taken. For women the ideal spot to place a heart rate monitor would be under the bra and under the breasts.

Now it is time to turn on your heart rate monitor. If you should find abnormal or hyper or dead reading after starting it try putting it in another position. Keep in mind also that the monitors tend to easily pick up other transmitters.

A heart rate monitor also requires that it be taken care of properly. Most of these devices are water resistant, but nonetheless they should be placed in dry places with enough room around them. They can be cleaned with warm water and soap and then dried of with a soft towel. No alcohol should be used and batteries need to be replaced every now and then.

Now you are on your way to achieve a heart friendly life and in your heart monitor you will find a welcome companion. With the correct calculations and care, plus knowledge and right tools, then you’re on your way.

Choosing The Right Camping Generator

0

Everybody, at some point, has wanted to own and buy a generator. However, there are a number of different generators that is available in the market. The most popular being the camping generators, emergency power generators, standard portable, RV, jobsite, and marine generators catering to a whole variety of uses. This is one of the reasons why before buying, you should first figure out how and where you’ll be using that generator.

If you are, however, looking for a camping generator, this is the right place for you. This article can give you some points in how to choose the right one for your needs and demands.

Generators generally have only two parts, the engine and the alternator. So, the size and other characteristics, like its quietness and price, of the whole equipment usually depend on the size and quality of these two components. But, despite the common belief of most, the alternator is really that plays the biggest part and its type should be one of the greatest factor you should consider in getting a generator.

The two types of alternators are the standard and the inverter. Standard generators are made up of heavy copper coils that generate the electricity. Equipments with this type of alternators are usually noisy since the engine is required to maintain a 3,600 rotation speed per minute so it can produce power, and it also consumes more fuel. Apart from this, it is not for power sensitive electronics because it cannot produce electricity as clean as utility power.

Inverter generators, on the other hand, can produce clean AC power. It is also very light and compact and its engine can run at different speeds that reduce the noise.

This second type is the more suitable type for camping generators. As you will need it to be handy so you can carry it around, they are small and lightweight. They are also usually ready for easy refueling and very quiet. However, as it is really compact, its power capacity is also limited, having low wattage, so it can only energize two or three appliances. But this shouldn’t be the case, since you are outdoors and you should be enjoying nature and staying away from electronics, right?

With these tips already on hand, you can now check out your local or online generator store and snag yourself that handy equipment you need for your hiking trip.

The Best College Football Teams to Start the Season

0

8. Ole Miss to compete for the SEC. I really like this team this season because of a relatively weak division (save for Florida), and the fact that I do think they can actually beat the Gators, though not every time out. Snead seems to have Tebow’s number and I see this team making the Sugar Bowl.

7. Virginia Tech. A bit under the radar this year after a letdown in 2008, as the team lost four games. However, there’s really not much competition in the ACC and the Hokies should start out at number seven for that reason. A tough schedule may force them to sink in the rankings.

6. Ohio State Buckeyes. This is a team that could definitely compete for the national title if things fall the right way. They have a pretty tough schedule, but some easy match-ups to go with them and Terrell Pryor should be a major force this season. I see this team making the Rose Bowl at worst.

5. Alabama. It looks like Alabama has a good shot at the national title game this season. The only real things that stand in the way are LSU, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. Still, this team could easily finish with two losses or less.

4. USC. A very young team, but possibly the most talented one in football. The inexperience makes it difficult to believe they’ll go all the way, but an early match-up against Ohio State will set the tone for the season. I expect good things either way.

3. Big 12’s – Oklahoma. Oklahoma Sooners are a big favorite to upset Texas and represent the Big 12 in the Championship game. With returning Heisman winner Bradford and a returning receiver lineup that put up record numbers last year. Oklahoma has a tough schedule including BYU, Miami, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, and Oklahoma St, whom allthey should defeat.Oklahoma’s only speed bump and possible detour will be Texas in week 6. The winner of that game will represent 1 half of the BCS title game. If they miss the Title game they will more than likely play in theFiesta Bowl against the ACC or Undefeated WAC/MAC team.

2. Big 12’s – Texas. Texas Longhorns are the other big favorite to represent the Big 12 in the title game. They have essentially the same schedule as Oklahoma and are returning most of their starters on offense, including standout QB Colt McCoy,and defense. Week 6 against Oklahoma will determine which bowl game they will reserve in January, the Orangeor BCS title game. Likely to lose one game in an upset.

1. Florida. Tim Tebow is back yet again, and Florida will be a favorite to win with his presence. Additionally, most of their defensive core from last year remains in place, as well as their offense. The biggest loss is Percy Harvin, but this team should be just fine – especially with an easy schedule.

Why Joe Crede Must Win the Gold Glove

0

With the lowest total of errors at the 3B position and the highest fielding percentage in the AL at the position, Joe Crede has obviously been effective at third base for the Twins in 2009. There’s a new metric that’s taken more seriously, though, and this is called the UZR.

Aside from the regular offensive contributions that Crede gives to the team, his UZR and his fielding stats have been top notch, and even better than his hitting. This has been invaluable to the Minnesota ball club.

To build on the UZR, there’s a stat called the UZR 150, which goes to show how many runs a player has cost or saved his team over the span of 150 games played at a certain position. Crede’s UZR is about 27 runs per 150 games at 3B. To put it into perspective, the next best in the AL after Crede there is Adrian Beltre, at around 17.

With dominant numbers like this, you have to wonder why Joe Crede doesn’t get more respect. In fact, hardly anyone realizes just how good he is at the position.

In conclusion, Crede has benefited this team in so many ways. Crede has provided power in 14 HR to the middle-bottom of the order…Crede has the highest fielding percentage in the american league (.985) with only 3 errors committed. Crede ranks at the top of all third baseman in UZR and UZR/150 saving an average of 25-30 runs.

There’s no question that Crede should win the gold glove at third base this season, in my opinion. Looking at the stats, he dominates his competition in UZR, fielding percentage, and errors. I don’t see why he wouldn’t.

The Twins seemed to get snubbed for these awards every year. Save for Morneau’s recent MVP award, there have been quite a few worthy fielders in recent years who haven’t won the award. Castillo, Morneau, and Mauer, to name a few.

The Gold Glove voters are biased, as are the All-Star voters. This would also explain whyCarlos Gomezdid not win a Gold Glove last year, despite being the best defensive CF in the Major League Baseball – along withGrady Sizemore.

Will Favre Actually Improve the Vikings?

0

Brett Favre has done it again. Tricking the football world into believing he was truly retired this time around, he signed a last minute contract with the Vikings, worth a reported $25 million over two seasons. It sounds like those in the know already knew that Favre was coming back this whole time. While this will receive much hype, I don’t think it’ll improve the Vikings.

Favre will be 40 in October. How many quarterbacks lead their teams to Super Bowls at 40. He’s as durable as they come and he’s showed great longevity through his career, but still…

…he’s already coming off major bicep surgery! Plus, he still has a slight tear in his rotator cuff, which could become much worse. So, we’ve got a 40-year old QB who’s coming off major surgery and is technically still injured. That’s got to instill lots of confidence in your team! But people will say, “but Josh, he’s 3x MVP, 10x Pro Bowler, and a sure-fire Hall of Famer. He’d be a great addition to any team.” While there is no denying that Favre is undoubtedly a HOF QB, there’s just one problem…the Vikings aren’t getting that HOF QB! You can’t possibly believe Favre will be able to come back and produce as he did in his prime, especially not after coming off bicep surgery. The only thing he could possibly bring is leadership, which I’ll admit is valuable, but not if your play doesn’t help the club. Heck, look at John Smoltz. He’s a fantastic leader, but if you can’t pitch (2-5, 8.32 ERA), you won’t have a job. Leadership can’t replace production. Similarly, if Favre throws 22 INT’s like he did last year, he probably won’t have a job, either.

Look at the way that Favre looked during the second half of 2008 with the Jets. So many picks, his injuries, and everything led the team to implosion. He threw 9 interceptions during the last five games of the season. While he’ll obviously play over Tarvaris Jackson in Minnesota, I have to say that Jackson’s last four games consisted of just one interception.

Jackson’s success also had to do with a growing rapport between himself and his receivers. As they became more comfortable with each other (on and off the field), their chemistry led to more success during games. Favre has no experience with any of these receivers.

As far as the rest of the team goes, Favre doesn’t seem to get along with his teammates these days either. Look at all of the incidents in New York, with Thomas Jones and Favre not having dressed with the team, traveled with the team, or anything else. He sees himself as better than his teammates and this won’t bode well in Minnesota.

The Vikings will surely generate a lot of buzz with this move, and it may be good for them as far as publicity goes. As far as their success, though, I can’t say that I think they’ll have a better record in 2009.

He’s old. He’s worn down. He thinks he’s better than the rest of his team. He’ll be rusty. There’s just a lot working against him, despite his incredible talent. I’m not sure I agree with this move.

The Splendid Courses of Breckenridge for Golfers

0

Have you been to Breckenridge Golf Club? Any golfer should not miss the chance to experience what its like to play in the 27-hole municipal golf course designed by the renowned golfer Jack Nicklaus. The course opened with only 18 holes in 1985. With the success of its operation, the municipal officials decided to add nine more holes in 2001. The new nine holes became known as The Elks Nine and is located at the highest part of the course, giving its players the best panoramic view of the mountains and of course, the elks.

The Praise

The praises that Breckenridge Golf Club gets from many golfers are made formal by the recognitions it gets from the likes of Colorado Golfer which named the Nicklaus-designed course both the Best Mountain Course and the Toughest Mountain Course. Another confirmation came from Golf Digest which gave it 4-1/2 stars in its Places to Play guide while naming it among the nations top Upscale Places to Play.

Course Characteristics

The High-Altitude Game

So, what impresses the visitors about this golf course aside from its designer? Maybe you have played in a few other Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses but you should still visit the Breckenridge Golf Club for its unique features. For example, have you played at an elevation of over 9300 feet higher than sea level? There is less air resistance and gravity at that elevation, so your ball will be easier to control than when you are playing at lower altitudes. Playing at The Elk Nine is a good opportunity to set a new record for your game score.

Great Golf Weather

Temperatures at higher elevations are much cooler compared to those at lower elevations. Golfers love cool temperatures because they dont sweat that much even if they stay long in the courses, walking from one hole to another hole. If its summer, the temperature is leaning towards the 70s range, sometimes 80 degrees but it seldom happens. During spring and fall, have your jacket on and you can stay in the golf course for hours.

Demanding Terrain

Even the experts find the course a challenge (Since Jack Nicklaus is the designer, what do you expect?). There are four teeing points. Pick your course according to your level of skills- from the Easiest which include less obstacles to the Experts terrain which include more obstacles and difficult terrains.

The Backdrop

Possibly, the finest windfall of choosing to play golf in Breckenridge is the breathtaking vista that you see anywhere you turn. If you happen to be seeing Bear Nine, you are also viewing a historic spot as that was where the miners searching for gold in Breckenridge used to have their tent city. The golf course also presents a good view of natures beauty through the native grass and the wetlands as well as overviews of the Ten-Mile Range as well as the Breckenridge Ski Resort. In Beaver Nine, youll see the masses of rock piles that were left behind by the miners. The beaver ponds actually add to the difficulties of the nearby holes. Dont let the beavers add to your frustration, if you are. Look at the Buffalo Mountain and its beauty will ease out some of that frustration. The golfers at Elk Nine are privileged with the most extensive scenery that includes Breckenridges Ten-Mile Range, the lush greenery and a lake. The lake and the bushes raise the difficulty level of the course but at the same time offer their breathtaking beauty to the golfers.

Such extraordinary effects make Breckenridge a joy to any golfer. If you choose to stay in a Breckenridge condo or in a vacation home that are just short distances from the golf course, you wont be taking much time away from golf. A widely recognized golf course, combined with golf weather and magnificent scenery-where else can you find a better place?
